P30 – Graptopetalum Amethystinum

$4.99

Graptopetalum ‘Amethystinum’, also known as ‘Lavender Pebbles’ or ‘Jewel Leaf Plant’, is a native Mexican succulent. Its chubby, rounded leaves exhibit a lovely lavender color, reminiscent of the popular succulent variety called Moonstones (Pachyphytum oviferum). While Graptopetalum amethystinum displays a distinct purple hue, Pachyphytum oviferum typically showcases pale green or bluish-green leaves with hints of pink or purple on the leaf margins. Graptopetalum amethystinum produces delicate star-shaped flowers in pale pink or yellow shades, while Pachyphytum oviferum bears bell-shaped flowers on tall stems, available in pink, yellow, or white tones.

Graptopetalum amethystinum, also known as “Lavender Pebbles” or “Jewel Leaf Plant,” is a succulent that belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Taking care of Graptopetalum amethystinum involves providing the right growing conditions and adopting proper maintenance practices. Here are some guidelines to help you care for your Graptopetalum amethystinum:

  1. Light:
    • Provide bright but indirect sunlight. Graptopetalums thrive in full to partial sunlight. A few hours of direct morning sunlight is usually beneficial, but protect them from intense afternoon sun, especially in hot climates.
  2. Soil:
    • Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. A mix that contains perlite or sand will help prevent overwatering and ensure proper aeration for the roots.
  3. Watering:
    • Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Graptopetalums are succulents and are adapted to arid conditions. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Water sparingly, and make sure the soil is dry at least an inch deep before the next watering.
  4. Temperature:
    • Graptopetalums prefer temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Protect them from frost, as they are not cold-hardy.
  5. Humidity:
    • Graptopetalums are adapted to low humidity environments. They do well in normal indoor humidity levels.
  6. Container:
    • Use a container with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom. This helps prevent root rot.
  7. Fertilizing:
    • Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced, liquid fertilizer. Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the dormant period in fall and winter.
  8. Pruning:
    • Trim leggy or elongated growth to maintain a compact shape. You can propagate these cuttings to grow new plants.
  9. Propagation:
    • Graptopetalum amethystinum can be propagated from leaf cuttings or offsets. Allow cuttings to dry and callus for a day or two before planting them in well-draining soil.
  10. Pests and Diseases:
    • Keep an eye out for pests such as mealybugs and aphids. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
  11. Dormancy:
    • Graptopetalums may go through a dormant period in the winter. During this time, reduce watering and avoid fertilizing.
  12. Protection from Harsh Weather:
    • If you’re growing Graptopetalum amethystinum outdoors, provide protection from heavy rains, as they are prone to root rot in excessively wet conditions.
